The geographical information industry has its own type of Big Data called 'Spatial Big Data', and as this grows, so does the attention required to store it in a way that allows fast and efficient processing. PostgreSQL/PostGIS has become a very attractive option to this industry with the benefits that it brings. PostgreSQL DBAs and users can expect increased exposure to spatial data as it becomes more heavily utilised.

This is an introduction to the PostGIS extension and will cover the following topics:

  • Useful things that a spatially enabled PostgreSQL can do
  • A look at the 4 main spatial types that PostGIS supports and what each is useful for (Geometry, Geography, Raster, Topology)
  • Useful Open Source tools to get you started with PostGIS
  • A selection of commonly used spatial queries and how they work
  • Visualisation of spatial data
