Choosing the right replication technology for your needs

Date: 2018-12-07

Database replication can be a confusing topic. There are numerous options, all with widely varying capabilities and claims. There isn't much guidance about how to evaluate your application and your requirements then select an appropriate technology. Your technology choices should be decided by understanding what your priorities are and how each available product fits into those priorities.

If you've been wondering what's so great about multi-master, what on earth "logical" and "physical" replication are, whether your workload is "OLTP" or "OLAP", or whether "eventually consistent" is good or bad, this is for you.

I can help you understand the differences between the major different kinds of replication and where their strengths and weaknesses lie. I'll show you some common categories of deployment and application requirements and how those categories can help you with picking appropriate solutions. I'll show you that you have to make compromises because no one technology can do everything you want, then I'll help start you on the path to making the best compromises for your specific needs.
